The Frankenstein archetype (thoughtelss scientists loose mayhem into the world), what's wrong with it, and why it wasn't even in Mary Shelley's novel. https://reason.com/archives/2018/03/04/victor-frankenstein-is-the-rea … via @reason

Isnt Marry Shelley's story also mostly about questions, what is natural and unnatural... and how trying to over-order nature in unnatural ways is immoral? You can say Frakenstein's the monster cuz he was unrestrained, but the message of the book suggests his attempt was immoral.

Could you explain what you mean by "unnatural"? With methodological naturalism, we have to pursue understanding of everything that happens as "natural", though perhaps not understood. It seems to me there is just nature and its consequences, and we are not exempt.

. @dearmouse51 @prometheusgreen - I wasn't talking about my own views, I think natural vs unnatural is a false dichotomy. According to me, everything that comes from and is created in nature is natural. Something that is unnatural cannot exist.

Pinker did not read it either. He draws a conclusion opposite the author's.

Bravo, Dr. Pinker. Happened to read this on the heels of watching Dr. Freeman Dyson explain humanists vs. naturists. Responsible innovation will continue to improve the world, despite the protestations of Luddites.

Just studied this book in a literature class. The good doctor ironically lacked empathy: he brought new life into the world without thinking about how that creature would fare. Bringing something new into the world: a big responsibility.

Somehow I always interpreted Frankenstein with an empathetic feeling for the persecuted monster. If anything the left in their zealous pursuit of gender and racial equality should view him in the same way, instead they use him as an image of revulsion against technology.

How many people read the novel as opposed to watching the movie? They're very different stories.

Flexner was a passionate disciple of modernizing medicine by incorporating science https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flexner_Report …. He is rolling over in his grave at the notion of his work being used to push a woo driven world view.

World is packed with either/or thinkers who cannot understand how many things can be good, mildly good, neutral, mildly bad, and bad They want to you to love or leave, stand for or stand against Primitive thinking serves science as poorly as it serves religion Adults admit faults
