Do you believe his account of declining relational values? I’m coming to realize that decline is probably exaggerated like all the others.

I do in 2 respects. One is the result of globalization's ubiquitous diaspora. In the East that's farm to factory. In the West factory to metro office. Comtech Rev mitigates but doesn't eliminate. Two, w/in the flow-to zones new network channels are still comparatively weak.

Except there is a very documented scientific rationale (evolutionary kin bias) to why one feels affection for relations (even 3rd cousins)!! (Response to last line of the article)

I'd like to see the John Gray, Ph.D review of this review.

Gray has to be onto something here. I mean, he is John Gray, Ph.D: author of "Men Are From Mars, Women Are from Venus," a book which revolutionized the dating tip.

About halfway through “Enlightenment Now” and seeing the stark contrast between your well-documented optimism and Twitter’s crass, pessimistic brevity. Life, like perception, involves choices. Choosing your text before bed seems to be the better way to end the day.

How does a study of relational emotionality not admit rational explanations and scientific approaches? The very basis of modern personality and social psychologies rely on them, but Brooks seems to deny that (Esp the last sentence)

I am halfway through Enlightenment Now and finding worthwhile and profound insight in it. Even here in the sticks of east Texas your work is greatly appreciated. Thank you Dr. Pinker!

Read article. Author fails to realize that problems we have today w/ social media & other problems pale in comparison to how ppl lived 100 years ago. What type of life was it in 1900 when the avg lifespan was in the 40s? We now have the opportunity to live a longer & btr life

Parents now spend twice as much time with their children as 50 years ago. ( TE 11.27.2017 ) Hardly a " breakdown of family life" - I spent much more than twice the time with my kids than our father did with us. And he was a caring father already.

Thoughtful disagreement between these two men is, in itself, highly instructive. Thankfully, there are people with their special gifts to help us make sense of these tumultuous times.
