Good read, thank you. "The minority of one is the most oppressed minority of all." The collective has become increasingly irrational in its thinking.

an alternative hypothesis millennials are far less cool with people being assholes and bigots than previous generations. this can go too far but thats just the nature of discourse and discovery. Too often the "free speech" crowd turns out to be socially regressive conservatives.

Michael are you the sort of person who thinks clapping is too confrontational and you should just wave your hands up to approve wave downwards to disapprove or something n the middle if it’s all too difficult? Or does this question render me a conservative regressive asshole?

It means you need to read my post again where I said it sometimes goes too far. But your example is classic ant-hill into a mountain. Basically no millennials do that except for a super small faction of college kids, but you can ignore real issues with bullshit moral outrage

Probably just regression to the world-historical mean. Postwar America was an economic and cultural fluke, and we shouldn't be surprised that deeper trends have pulled us back from fluky ones.

Of course hate speech should be banned. Disagreement or even the usual insults aren’t hate speech. Threats, promotions of hatred against a group of people, those sorts of things are hate speech. White nationalist being called out isn’t hate speech. KillAllWhite is. Bullying is.

All more reasons to invest in education. College is a good place to learn science, history, and most importantly humanity. But now with young people maturing earlier, high school and middle school need to up their game. We need an education of love as the foundation of all else

The young people today are purging this culture of the bad bits. They just haven’t figured out exactly the right way yet. We need a culture evolution, not a culture revolution. They need to learn the real bad is cruelty, hatred and violence, and they exist in each person.

They too need to be called out when they are wrong, without the use of hate speech. They need to learn and we need to teach by examples. One does not make anyone better, only worse, by bashing others with verbal violence, including oneself. Especially oneself. Violence corrupts.

It’s not bad being morally aware and to update the moral codes. They just have to understand it’s not people that is the enemy, and that the only way to evolve is the improvement of every single person, themselves included, which is not going to happen by persecution

Can't imagine Matt Ridley took many minutes to write this piece. His writing on genetics some years ago was engaging but I can't help thinking he's trying to draw fire by being contrary. I've never seen an account of his role at Northern Rock during its collapse. Any links?
