Hugh Hewitt doesn't read enough books. I was thinking, just this morning about religion and its believers. I'm no academic, by an order of magnitude, but how do smart, educated, and yes, sophisticated people think some guy sits up in heaven and runs the place?
-

-
Because that’s not what they think.
-
Uh. Yeah it is.
-
No. The Christian theological tradition is ancient and rich and deep and, yes, sophisticated, philosophically informed and rigorous. That does not describe the concept of God nor God’s relation to the world held by the likes of Augustine, Aquinas, Newman, Ratzinger, etc.
-
I am immovable in my religious position (anti-theist) and at the same time I respect your belief (catch all word). Peace and love my friend.
-
Apologies,
@maryjane0196, that comment was intended for Mr. Cushing, who seemed to want to engage further. I respect your desire not to continue further in this venue. Be well.

In my experience sophisticated people have imagination, are open to mystery and tend not to judge others because of their believes
-
Except when their beliefs are ridiculous; thus warranting ridicule. The only way to get beyond magical thinking.

1 Corinthians 1:25; 1 Corinthians 3:19 — the world will never understand God’s wisdom apart from regeneration by the Holy Spirit. The Truth of God’s Word is offensive to those who have not trusted Jesus Christ for salvation. God’s Word > man’s wisdom.
-
My holy book of my religion (Awesomanity) would say that the truth of it would be offensive to those who don't believe me, and that my plan is beyond understanding of critics. With enough people behind me, I could get away with anything. That's why we have science.

And some may be. Who cares? If you're writing for those who MAY be offended, then something is very wrong. Oh, wait...if that were the case, you wouldn't be writing anything at all. Carry on!

If one defines “miracle” as an event without any possible scientific explanation then I’m with Steven. If you define it as an event that is statistically extremely improbable then I believe miracles happen everyday.
-
"Extremely improbable" and "happen everyday" can't both be true. There are no miracles.
-
It's extremely improbable Person X wins the lottery, but someone somewhere wins the lottery every day.

So tired of the specious pejorative-people of faith believe in “fairies” or an “Iron Age” thought system. Paganism/Atheism is among the oldest thought systems and contains in it the silliest of presuppositions. Scientism is nothing more than updated paganism. Belief is truth.
-
Whats the silly presuppositions in atheism?
