If the apocalypse is not coming, thank an activist. Apocalypses do not avert themselves.

Excellent, I’ll be listening. BTW, you don’t use the word ‘iconic’ like that in the book, do you?

Maybe the apocalypse isn't coming, maybe the world is becoming less violent - but the world is slowly and surely losing its essence, it is dissolving in a puddle of social media.

A great response to the 'new optimists' - and their god, Pinker (who love to repeat the blindingly obvious - devt helps with health etc. - extend the argument to an ineluctable universal law), is Oliver Burkeman's essay https://www.theguardian.com/news/2017/jul/28/is-the-world-really-better-than-ever-the-new-optimists … @AndrewMarr9 @oliverburkeman

Leading expert in language and linguistics badly misuses the word ‘iconic’. Pedestrian, forum for people pushing books. Pinker’s books are better than most of the mush they feature. @BBCRadio4

I agree that the apocalypse isn't coming and life is getting better! But someone needs to remind @LKrauss1 that the apocalypse isn't coming and life's getting better.

The number of nuclear warheads was never an issue, no-one ever expected someone to fire 10,000! It’s the prospect of 2 men that might fire one each that’s the worry!

Life is getting demonstrably better, but an apocalypse is by nature unpredictable. Add Trump, Kim, Putin, Syria and Pakistan and things get darker.

Hard data is always good, nice work. However, life satisfaction is not based on data but feelings and expectations according to our times. The fact that we have better numbers than human beings 2 centuries ago, is not by itself, a source of happiness and satisfaction to us.
