Saturation coverage of rampage killers gives them exactly what they seek. Every day as many Americans are killed in homicides as in a mass shooting. Legal scholar Adam Lankford proposes: Stop encouraging mass killers by making them celebrities. https://www.ua.edu/news/2017/10/ua-researcher-changes-needed-to-news-coverage-of-mass-shooters/#.WobnzMXpVcI.twitter …

This time it feels different. The kids and families from MSD HS are speaking up and claiming their rightful spotlights. The media has to follow them. It's the most encouraging thing I've seen following mass shootings.

You can focus on the victims without focusing on the suspect.

I’ve been saying this for years! There is evidence that such approach works with respect to suicides by train. In Czech and Germany, where there is a “gentleman agreement” among the media on reporting vaguely on such incidents, the effect appears to be 25% reduction.

There was a great summary of this on @charltonbrooker's Newswipe almost a decade ago: https://youtu.be/PezlFNTGWv4  And still about the only person I see actively following the advice in their reporting is @PhillyD.

Boxing’s Friday Night Fights used to turn the camera on fights in the audience. This led to an explosion of assaults in the crowd by people wanting to be on tv. When they changed their policy to stop filming the attendees’ fights in the stands, they all but completely stopped.

This is fascinating...can you provide a link to the research? My terms aren't producing a hit.

I witnessed it unfold during years of watching Friday Night Fights that became Tuesday Night Fights hosted by Sean O’Grady. I’m sure if you email Sean or a former producer of the show they’d be able to give you their accounts.

I understand the constraints of charac. limitations, but it's clearly misleading to posit propositions— based on little more than personal impressions—as blanket assertions, especially when using 'explosion of fights...all but completely stopped'.

I watched every week for years, you could always tell when there was a fight in the stands whether it was aired or not because you could hear the crowd roar while they looked up into the bleachers instead of the ring. It went from rare to multiple per night then back to rare.

@CNN hosts doing their shows live from the crime scene are a good illustration of this.

Mental illness propounded with powerful meds, self-centered culture, single parenthood, broken school systems, immoral TV shows and movies, and all around Godless teachings wherever you look- these are but a few of the reasons why tragedies like this happen.

Plus spike in gun sales usually follows news coverage of shootings.
