Tell that to the ADL, BLM, La Raza, etc. The identity politics manufactured by the Left is coming back to bite them.

A good one. I'd love to discuss with you the Humean view of reason you evince at the end (that reason is merely instrumental and theoretic). How, then, to think rationally about ends? This is one of a few ways in which the Platonic view of reason is superior.

Could you (or perhaps @ortoiseortoise) direct me to a source / keyword that covers this supposed tension? Or layout the basic claim? Because it feels to me (may be me misreading) like you are saying we *should* reify reason in some manner, and this feels deeply unnecessary to me.

The basic claim is that although reason allows us to (1) determine what is true (in its theoretical capacity), its practical capacity is not limited to (2) the determination of means to ends. For it can also (3) determine which ends are good and which are not.

Is Pinker making claim 3? Because (3) seems to me to be completely false, unless we are also including things like moral intuitions, common-sense, or other faculties within "reason". I'm not really opposed to that (reason ≠ rationality), but then this is a less interesting claim

No, Pinker implicitly denies (3). I think the other comments showed what I have in mind in my belief in (3), but just to be clear, I don't believe in the epistemic value of moral intuitions or common sense. Those are usually ideology and prejudice pretending to be philosophy.

Enlightenment values maybe. Reason, no. There are plenty of cases where group identity is rationally and empirically defensible, and confers genuine and material advantages, hence, it's economically and evolutionarily rational as well.

ID politics stems from postmodernism which is just the latest incarnation of the original reaction to the Enlightenment led by Rousseau who said that science is bad, civilization is corrupt and innocence is to be found among primitives.

Isn't the term 'African American' exclusionary and no longer PC? What if they're not from Africa? After all it's Black lives Matter, not African American Lives Matter. Why not just use the word black?
