No. It's just a general train wreck where most of the positive seen over the past thousand years is on pace to being canceled out by rapidly rising/destabilizing socioeconomic inequality and ecological disaster.

The argument that hunter gatherers were better off, seems lazy. They were fine (not really) until famine, drought, flood or disease hit. Also remember when those Spanish conquistadores wiped millions of them off the face of the earth (cos the Spanish wanted what they had)/1
-
Turns out the Spanish weren't the only ones to ever do that. Everyone did. And would again. This notion of the equality we always had which capitalism stole and we should get back. Look at any social animal that lives in a group. Are they all for the equality of outcome? /2
-
Things before were never better. We make them better. They were simpler, sure. Turns out evolution creates more complexity. But the whole: "this is too hard, let's go back to a simpler time" is futile. No, we can't go back. And why would we? Should we all be jellyfish again? /3
-
Progress is a complex idea. When people speak of different times and different cultures it is to understand the role environment and its interaction with our evolutionary psychology/sociobiology plays. No one suggests "going back" to anything but to change appropriately.

And I know we should take some solace in the fact that things have gotten better in the aggregate. But that isn’t going to do anything to assuage the anguish of parents who are now having to plan closed casket funerals for their teenage children. It just won’t, and can’t.

Of course Bill Gates thinks the world is getting better. He's a billionaire who lives in an ivory tower.

It’s hard to believe you thought it was a good idea to tweet this out a few hours after a mass shooting.
