Enlightenment=good. Glad we're agreed. Inequality = Not a big deal. Okay, now we have an issue. Obesity, homelessness, social capital, health costs, happiness, economic mobility, disease and even Innovation are all negatively impacted as wealth inequality goes up.

The claim was that "the dangers of inequality have been overstated." You have to remember that this book is about global progress. If you want to critique his views on income inequality, then read this first:http://bigthink.com/big-think-books/steven-pinker-enlightenment-now-inequality-happiness …

Yes, it's better to be rich and unequal, than poor and equal. It's also better to have herpes and no aids, than just plain old aids. It doesn't mean that herpes isn't bad.

Did anyone predict that we’d need someone to defend “good” news? I look forward to reading the new book

"dead white men in wigs." Geez, so the guardian needs to explain to his readers what enlightenment is.

I remember when I thought the Guardian wasn’t an ideological rag. My option of you hasn’t changed over time tho. You’re awesome.

we are only sustainable on the energy front if nothing changes from today (even population) there is only about 50 years of fossil fuels left as it is...and metals for green energy will be depleted soon after
-
any source on this claim? most of my colleagues have asserted we aren't running out of fossil fuels any time soon, and although cobalt is relatively rare iron and lithium arent going anywhere
-
1) let's assume we go all renewables tomorrow...and use solar/wind to charge batteries to use at night. The US nightime load is about 6000 gigawatts (based on US consumption of 10 terawatt hours/day) (check my math lol)
-
2) how much lithium would that take...assume 400 Wh/kg Li-Ion...that is about 16 * 10^7 kg of lithium (more for Co).
-
3) the USGS estimates Li at 12 * 10^9, we are off by only a factor of 100! and that doesn't include cars or the rest of the world. Now there obviously may be more to be found...but we are close to a limit on Li.

Not everything is getting better all the time here in the UK. Wages, rents (don't even think about mortgages) all in serious decline for young adults as university fees are the highest in the world Seehttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/newsbeat-43114746/young-people-in-the-uk-have-suffered-a-wage-slump …

what do you have to say about guns in the US? I'd rather hear your opinion on this, please.

I just don't know about you anymore
@sapinker. I don't know what it is. But you've drifted. I'll read your book, and then I'll be back to comment.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I'm fairly right wing, but i would love to have
@sapinker for dinner and talk for hours about ideas, even though his intellect would dwarf mine, lol. He is a true left wingeer, not what most of it has degenerated into these days. A good man.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
