Will you talk about base-rates and profiling? Harris has a weird blind spot about that.
-
I think it's wise to par a couple of percent more attention to men than to women. Is this profiling?

When you are looking for a very low probability event (such as some individual is a terrorist), then there is no meaningful gain in targeting category X even if almost all terrorists are X. Here’s an excerpt of something I wrote years ago.pic.twitter.com/2uX2AJqmGa

This might make sense, I'll leave it to the pros to decide. But explain the word for me (a foreigner, that is): Is me being less worried about meeting a group of grandmas in a dark alley than a group of hooded young men "profiling"?
-
Of course none of this base rate stuff matters if your goal isn’t detection. If you goal is to intimidate a group and say “we’re watching you” then profiling is effective. But if those are your goals, you should be honest about them. The math, however, is not on your side.

Hmmm, I'm starting to believe you're not the bayesian you claim ... I wanted to understand a word, and you immediately tro to disabuse me of a strawman I never build. I don't compare the two, I just wanted to know what the expression "profiling" contains.

Profiling is using P(B|A) in forming sampling decisions when seeking to identify events in A, given B. It’s legitimate for some of P(A) and P(B|A), but not others. There, I have told you hat profiling is.

What are your current thoughts on America’s ongoing reactionary/populist mess? Will it end with Trump? I want someone to tell me it’ll end with Trump. But looking at other countries, destructive populism tends to stay in power longer than rational politics.
