"Late in life an artless man has learned that he could leave his linguistic fly unzipped and life would go on. It may not be pretty, but it isn't a sign that his pants are going to fall down."

Interesting. "[Trump's] ample use of [casual speech] suggests an especially strong focus upon the self."
-
...and water is wet. I always find it funny when Trump haters try to hammer on this point exactly as Trump lovers are openly declaring that this is part of what they like about him.
-
Exactly—hence "interesting"! I was primarily referring to a scientific framework for contextualising Trump's narcissism and its consequences, but the division in public /reception/ to his use of casual language is perhaps even more interesting.
-
Well said. I like to play the game where I pretend I'm writing a survey and have to come up with the most innocuous statement/response pair that strongly correlates to something (eg Trump support). I would like to try out, "It is often okay to take what's mine."

...but I digress. Ha ha.

Well, this was fascinating. Is it more or less frightening to think that he is mentally fully competent?

Good analysis and as an introspective linguist, I agree!

Ok that’s a fair question but absent a clear diagnosis of a medical condition, another type of analysis is possible! The article’s author is looking at the subject from a whole different perspective and that doesn’t mean it’s faulty or mean to suit an agenda/ideology.

The article is regarding cognition not mental health. Trump took the MoCA which among other cognitive domains assesses language, ergo a linguist can evaluate that element of cognitive function.
-
Especially since all he is doing is assessing the strength of the current claims using the evidence cited in those claims.
