Burkeman mentions that parenting practices have no long-term effect on the child; he should have cited Judith Rich Harris's brilliant book The Nurture Assumption: Why Children Turn Out the Way They Do https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005JSSAH8/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_U_x_HShBAbFWHATAC … via @amazon

I will read this, which I see postulates that other children, not parents, socialize children. This rings utterly true to me. But as parents play a large role in selecting a child's peers, isn't that a parenting practice of major effect?

Judy Harris never gets credit for virtually single-handedly changing the way so many of us think about human development. Perhaps it was because she was out of the academy that she was able to think out of the blank slate box.

Is this similar to the findings that giving lots of extra help to a child doesn't improve their.ability, but abuse/neglect can prevent them reaching full potential?

Brian Dennis & Carl Wilson had very different personalities. Did Murry have no effect?

I find it hard to believe. There are significantly more similarities than differences in the way western parents bring up their children. Only comparing outcomes based on the differing practices could give you misleading results
