The US crime decline has brought huge benefits to poor and minority citizens. Thank better policing, and also nonprofits devoted to reducing crime.https://nyti.ms/2EFiJK7

But there's still the prison industrial complex, including the largest prison population on earth by incarcerated per capita. And economic divergence.

Could it possibly be that crime falls -because- so many criminals remain incarcerated?

I have mixed feelings 🤷🏾‍♀️ IMO, violent crime rates alone aren’t the ideal index for measuring the health and vitality of urban communities. There are too many factors shaping US police and crime problems that can’t be assuaged by cyclical dips in violent crime.

Surprised Stephen - normally so diligent and evidence-based - ascribes the huge crime drop to better policing and non-profits. It’s happened in every industrial country since the 1990s and is mostly caused by more appropriate security.

I think more likely vast reduction in lead poisoning? Same pattern worldwide: stop sale of leaded gasoline, and 20 years later, crime begins to decrease.
