A pattern I repeatedly found in assembling the data for Enlightenment Now: the world is progressing, but the US lags (& sometimes backslides) compared to other rich democracies. Example: life expectancy.https://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2018/01/10/worldwide-health-improves-america-lurches-backward/wCIHzNJrySVaYj8KoQA98L/story.html?s_campaign=bostonglobe:social:googleamp:sharetools …

The most convincing correlate (see 'The Spirit Level') is relative inequality when comparing US to other rich nations and US states to each other across a wide range of indicators of well being. As long as tackling inequality remains a taboo in the US, the slide will continue.

I think a result of poor educational methodologies used to teach literacy since the 1970s and the promotion of a high carb diet. People are dying of insulin resistance related diseases and they don’t have the ability to critically analyse diet research.

Obesity and broken social structures in poor inner city neighborhoods are likely culprits

Not to spawn a religious debate, but I think religion is partly responsible for this sort of thing. The whole "put it in God's hands" mentality can be very destructive due to lack of effort from the individual. Blind Watchmaker should be required reading.pic.twitter.com/87IRG3wVWA

Could it be explained by immigration from countries with lower life expectancy?

isn't that a function of the US diversity? If you compare life expectancy compared to etnic origin isn't US borns higher? I read that Swedish-Americans have longer life expectancy than native Swedes.

could be true for ethnicity, but US nonhispanic whites have about the same life expectancy as US overall (78.7 vs 78.8 in 2015) https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/hus/hus16.pdf#015 …

I hope there’ll be some closer research into the numbers than simply portraying them as such. Disparities in nation-wide life-expectancy, especially of a country as large as the US, say very little. I can think of several possible explanations off the top of my head.

Ya, ummm...could that maybe have something to do with our immigration policy? Like, couldn't letting a million people or more per year from the 3rd world shift of stats?

It's possible. It also could relate to the very low level of public expenditure per capita. And, undoubtedly, a great many other factors.

Brilliant, import the 3rd world and increase "public expenditure per capita" on them for what, stats? How racially homogeneous are the "wealthy nations" we're lagging?
