The Trump win proves democracy is alive and kicking in America, as is the economy. Celebrate that.

The arguments must be applied on both sides. The media’s ‘scorched earth’ policies toward Trump and their attempts to unseat him ‘by any means necessary’ amount to an attempted coup. Is that not a threat to democracy?

i see that you are atoning for your sins rather quickly. the article is laughable for many reasons - e.g. a perspective in which lawless judges overriding popular will are saving democracy.

        1) The leader shows only a weak commitment to democratic rules This was everyone after the Trump presidency, claiming he was illegitimate because russia rigged the election 2) He or she denies the legitimacy of opponents Wasn't this everyone when Trump was running?

        3) He or she tolerates violence What they mean by this is that even though he condemned the violence, he didn't condemn the nazis that were spotted somewhere in the charlottesville protest. They don't have the same standard for islamic attacks.

        4) He or she shows some willingness to curb civil liberties or the media. This wasn't expanded upon in the article but here's what Obama did.https://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/30/opinion/sunday/if-donald-trump-targets-journalists-thank-obama.html …

I don't get it. Trump hasn't threatened democracy at all, nor shown any desire to. He has worked within rules of system and resonated with tons of ppl.

Denial of truth as a matter of habit is a threat to democracy. Nepotism is a threat to democracy. Hatred is a threat to democracy. Ignorance is a threat to democracy. Do those count?

        1. I'm not sure I agree that those are greater-than-normal threats to democracy. Almost every individual participating in a democracy exhibits some portion of at least one of those flaws. In fact, that's part of why democ works - ppls' flaws kinda cancel each other out.

Trump could be impeached in a minute. The reason he's not is that Republicans choose to nurture this threat. The #GOP has to go.

Truly one of the worst articles I have read. This shows how deeply TDS affects its victims. Pinker cannot be trusted and with him, his entire Opus is in question. Can we trust anything he has ever written? Harvard too? With all the nuts policies coming out of it.

Levitsky & Ziblatt nailed it, but they soft-pedaled exactly who abandoned the norms of mutual toleration and forbearance. The left championed these norms & lost big because of it. You can't keep playing the game when one player breaks the rules with no consequence. @NickKristof

Please Levitsky & Ziblatt, Pinker & Kristof, what is the answer? The left is now forced to abandon these norms or they'll keep losing. How can norms be reestablished when half of the participants routinely flout them? Are we doomed to a vicious circle of norm destruction?

The problem is this well-intentioned (road to hell...) elevated threat discourse is being used to undermine democratic norms (peaceful transition, policy differentiation, 2 party system, 'wall' b/w foreign Intel & domestic surveillance, neutral press, unbiased professionals etc.)

Ever increasing plutocracy is THE threat against democracy. Inequality in the USA, or the world, reached its highest point in 2016, under Obama. That Trump is even worse is no excuse, but a diversion from Democrats' blatant failure to find a plausible remedy to plutocracy's rise!
