The hard truth is that humans are tribal and can't rise above it. The centripetal forces, like universalism and the Protestantism it stems from, are in fact Northwest European in origin. They don't even fit all White ethnicities.

Only Northwest Europeans. No one is even trying this crap on Russians. So it's not strictly about race.

this old article in the New Yorker tells two interesting stories about tribalism and civilization, I hope you enjoy it:https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2008/04/21/vengeance-is-ours …

Professor, you are smart. Why can't you see this is asymmetrical?

I’m hearing a lot about political tribalism. Long live peaceful and smart independents.

I justifiably feel that I’m morally superior to Neo nazis & other hate groups that feel embolden in the Trump era. There is no one on the Left that equates to them. That’s not tribalism— that’s simply knowing right from wrong.
-
Every single violent riot of the last two years was instigated by the left. "Yes, but when we do it it's justified!" is peak tribalism.

You know. You also know that if your opposition ever becomes as tribal as you are, it's over. They have all the mechanics, the farmers, the truck drivers, the linemen... all the people who make your existence possible. All they have to do is go on strike. No violence needed.

Elsewhere in NYT: “We are telling the world that it doesn’t matter what the nations of the world say,” Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan told more than 1,000 members of Likud’s central committee on Sunday. “The time has come to express our biblical right to the land.”

As soon as certain groups say, "enough!", in come the conservative tone police to chastise them for not being inclusive. David Brooks's dangerous divisiveness is my insistence on justice for all.
-
Also: "King was operating when there was high social trust..." = ?? (Yeah, I know what Brooks means, but it sure sounds like he's making a plea for the disenfranchised to just be a little nicer.)

The President of the United States literally has the support of the KKK. David Duke, a former Grand Wizard, endorses him. Neo Nazis march in support of him. The GOP has yet to condemn these individuals, but the Left is partially to blame for pointing out this evilness?
-
Lmao what? 1) can control who supports you, communists supported both Clinton and Obama, that doesn’t reflect morally on either candidate. 2) the GOP constantly denounced the KKK and denounced the Charlottesville people right away
-
The left is to blame for expanding the evilness of the kkk to basically accuse the entire right wing of holding the same views and goals as fringe groups the only maintain their importance because the left still uses them as a boogeyman.

how can the mild satisfactions of Enlightenment compete with hardwired, primitive and intense pleasures?
