I see David Brooks has come to the end of his tether, as well he should. I came from a background of Wm. F. Buckley-style conservatism, and how far things have sunk! (1/2)

To be honest, you can see the thread of celebration of folksy ignorance running through Reagan, Quayle, Gingrich, Bush, Palin and now...seems like a logical culmination. Friedman and Buckley were pretty much the last public intellectuals.

Of course, "Buckley conservatism" was rooted in white supremacy, so it's really not that different from what we see now.

Buckley changed later and became a strong supporter of Civil Rights. I have little doubt he would have repudiated today's race-baiters and birthers, especially the anti-intellectual ignoramuses. And he was nothing if not an articulate debater.https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/05/13/william-f-buckley-civil-rights-215129 …

The G.O.P. is long dead, it's rotted corpse tricked out in Mussolini's cast off jacket and scuffed boots. David Brooks missed the funeral about 17 years ago and just stumbled across the obituary.

It’s a helluva funeral. We own house, senate , White House, governorships and state legislatures. Keep up the good work democrats.

If you abandon all principle, use every unethical means to gain power, you can make very real gains. It doesn't mean you're conservatives. It means you're fascists.

Brooks has been late to the party, trying for some time to find glimmers of rationality or hope in Trumpism, but even someone as patient as Brooks can no longer rationalize the moral & intellectual bankruptcy of today's Republican party.

They are indeed rotten to the core, but they will keep winning because the Democrats are constantly shooting themselves in the foot.

Are you assuming that #RoyMoore is guilty until proven innocent? That's not the way #justice works in the #USA. No, he's #innocent until proven #guilty. Isn't it strange that these accusers suddenly show up all at once the moment he's seen as a political threat to the #Democats?

This is a bad article. Republicans have asked Republicans to leave. And will do so once Moore wins. They don’t want to lose the seat. No doubt, Franken would not have been forced out had a Republican been appointed soon thereafter.
