Poor reading skills often come from ignorance of facts. Text is always the tip of an iceberg of knowledge needed to comprehend a passage. Reading instruction must include teaching of basic knowledge. Op-ed by educ psych expdert Dan Willingham.https://nyti.ms/2i6t4cm

Teaching "basic knowledge" is important. But teaching students how to self monitor as they read is a *very important* "literacy" skill. Even adults rely on metacognition when reading a text with unfamiliar concepts.

This is really about comprehension, not reading. A person knowing nothing about New Zealand would have similar problems understanding a text if it were read to them, no?

This guy is the same in class. All lecture; no questions. He likes to hear himself tweet as much as he likes to hear himself talk. That first sentence, by the way, is a horror show.

"Comprehension is intimately intertwined with knowledge". In an attempt to be deeply student-centered and "democratic", our educational system results in opinionated and egocentric students that lack basic reading and writing skills
