Despite recent attention, workplace sexual harassment has declined over time: from 6.1% of GSS respondents in 2002 to 3.6% in 2014. Too high, but there's been progress, which can continue. https://goo.gl/omVaM8

Investigated cases for 15 years. Of dozens, one was founded. True quid pro quo or hostile workplace is exceedingly rare.

Largely consensual workplace relationships that went south. Dating at work isn’t generally prohibited except in manager - subordinate situations.

Why despite? Perhaps because of? Or alternately, perhaps we should explore if it's just reports that are down...

I think you misunderstood what he meant by "despite". I thought he meant despite how bad it might seem, it's been getting better.

I read, "Despite the increased coverage it's getting better." And I presented two explanations: coverage helps, or reports are down though harassing behavior is not.

The trend is steady. It wasn’t 6.1% then suddenly dropped to 3.6% several weeks ago when Hollywood began the purge

You don't think there might be a tipping point, where increased private scrutiny leads to sudden public scrutiny? Or a build-up of frustration at not being believed turned into an avalanche of public accusations? The real world is s-curves, not straight lines.

My point is, if the decline has been steady since 2002 then the recent flurry of sexual assault coverage was not responsible because it already declined prior to it. I think you misinterpreted Pinker initially, and are going at a separate argument which I’d actually agree on.

These are reported crimes. 99% of perpetrators of reported sexual violence walk free, if that's not incentive not to bother reporting I don't know what is.

No these are not reported crimes, it’s participants being asked directly in an anonymous survey.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, my bad! I can't seem to find a clear definition of their "not applicable" label in their results. 1288 people fell under that category in their survey, which is a lot.

I can imagine that peoples who work for themselves, at home, or who simply didn’t work are in « doesn’t apply ». I think it can explain the size of that category. (since it was a specific question about workspace in the last 12 month)

This abuse is very under reported. I worked with delinquent kids, reports of abuse at admission were low, after they established trusting relationships the number tripled.

Job security has also been declining. People in precarious jobs are less likely to report misconduct by their bosses/employers.
