In addition to some reasonable hypothesis around speed, seatbelts & alcohol as causes, is skill also a factor? Especially with inexperienced drivers? I've taken driving tests in US, EU and US, and in my experience US training/tests are less rigorous.

US is still very low for traffic fatality rate world wide, especially when you consider how dependent on automobiles our society is. Other rich countries have many more mass transport options.

America is an outlier in so many ways, it’s hardly a part of Western Civilisation any more. It’s just its own weird dystopian empire of lunacy, created by the stupidity and greed of the oligarchy.

The reasons cited by the NYT ignore the reality that the US is vastly more spread out than the EU. They cite speed, which seems reasonable in midtown Manhattan, but they don't have to drive 75 mi of dead straight road to get to the next town, or the dist to a lvl 1 trauma center.
-
But Canada is spead out too
-
Seatbelt use, perhaps (which the NYT mentions). I'm not saying they miss everything, but I'd speed just as much in Canada or Australia as I do here (unless the posted speed limits are higher). The population matters as well, spread out and 0 people makes for fewer accidents.

This is kinda alarmist considering the small differences per billion miles traveled. Also the most interesting part to me is the HUGE drop for France.pic.twitter.com/MZUTB3Mq9F

35k deaths per year and you call this alarmist? The alarm bells should be ringing louder
-
Diminishing returns are a thing, and trade offs have to be made. Deaths have been decreasing for decades. So shut the flibbertigibbet up.
-
The point of the article is that the rate of decrease is disproportionately slow. 35k dead each year is not just a stat, it’s real people, real lives. I’ll pass along your message to “shut up” to the families of the deceased.

What are you, 12?

Sexual “Harassment”? Women like it when they like it and dislike it when they dislike it. There are no “rules” that men “break.” Rape fantasies are common and people project this sexuality.

Ban cars or require for drivers to prove that they absolutely need it. Reduce in hardware max speed. Alternate odd/even plate numbers to drive on certain days.

Thats interesting! Your roads are far broader than in Europe on average, and you have automatic, and you drive slower on your motorways. One thing I always found dangerous in the US though is that you are allowed to overtake a car left and right.

What correlations can we draw from this, Steven? Oh that's right, you don't interact with your followers in the least. Guess I'll just have to read the book huh?

Thrust of article is faster recent rate of other nations reducing fatalities. But US driving is still getting safer in absolute terms

I always get picked on for wearing my seatbelt. Perhaps a seatbelt wearing commune is in order.
