Another factor in the Great US Crime Decline: Civil society organizations that civilize neighborhoods (part of what I called the "recivilizing process" in Better Angels).https://nyti.ms/2jggaZC

Nice! Reminds me of this other study - the density of nonprofits matters more for civic engagement than individual factors a la “bowling alone” https://sociology.stanford.edu/publications/civil-society-reconsidered-durable-nature-and-community-structure-collective-civic …

Not having any dangers creates existential emptiness, thus all the mass hysterias we have over nothing. For example "#RapeCulture" hysteria by white middle class college educated women who may be the safest group EVER in history. Without danger humans become mad.

Unfortunately, despite a continuous decline since the early 1990s, we are still far from the crime rates that existed in the early 1960s. That decade, so many bad trends began, including skyrocketing crime.

Keep quoting confirmatory sources and deny significance of escalating violence of mass shootings. Correct death rate btw is per head of population at risk.

With all respect, Pinker puts great emphasis on one to One violence with mass being limitation such as homicide

How do you know it's not the deterrent effect of better policing techniques, more police? The activities you describe increase trust/social capital....calling it re-civilizing process adds nothing to our understanding of social capital.

What about economic crime perpetuated on the poor and young through company war games etc. True murders and violent crimes have reduced but we do have DNA testing now. I liked your book and it a while since I read it, how was this accounted for?

I wish to stand corrected on this, but it appears there is a recent escalation in mass shootings in the US since 2008, is there not?
