“Awesome” is still in use as an emoticon. I have used it occasionally in text msgs as a tasteful, polite way to show displeasure about a person or topic, neither of which is necessarily mentioned in t/ text. Good word substitutes that stick are: bravo & kudo.

I’d like to see a rooted phylogenetic tree of languages, or even of word usage, with “common ancestors” and associated dates. I think it’s hard to go back farther with this than a few millennia, so much of the tree is unknown to us.
