Chomsky defends acad freedom of "pro-colonial" prof. Not surprising; steadfast champion of free thought & speech.http://www.thecollegefix.com/post/36998/

I don't often say this, but good for Noam Chomsky, then. Free speech needs all the defenders it can get these days!

Astonishingly confused replies to this tweet. Chomsky is not defending colonialism; he is defending the right to express the argument.

Again bad take...Chomsky is worried about the Journal imploding because of mistakenly publishing a bad article. No hero here.

I'm simply amazed at how authoritarian U.S. society has become. People calling for a withdrawal of the author's PhD, etc. Terrible! 1/2

Would Chomsky defend Hilter's pre-war speeches knowing what came next? What if free speech has a subtext, which engenders a process that end up subjugating another set of humans in future. Word have impact like actions. So, why not defend free actions? Guns? Violence?

With words and actions, freedom to do and say is only justified if there are no externalities. If there are externalities, then the person who materially suffers should have a say.

So you support having authoritarian controls that get to decide what speech puts forth acceptable ideas? That can't possibly go wrong

Why is it so hard for some people to separate defending the author's right to publish from agreeing with his argument?

I don't understand whether prof Pinker is being sarcastic or not. Colonialism is bad. I think that Chomsky opposes any form of it.
