How do you rebut an op-ed that basically claims "fifties values rock" without sources? Free speech = ok but I would like HER sources.

Right. Excellent question. Sounds like Pinker is just trying to win points with the anti-academia crowd. This is a non-issue.

Fantastic ad hominem there

This is why we have Trumpism. Outrage and mocking instead of sincere reasoned argument just pisses people off and entrenches them.
-
Um, there have been counter-arguments to her claims. Just, I mean, take a freakin' college course on the relevant issues.
-
That "um" is a problem. It's mocking, an ad hominem. It adds nothing to the discussion except to make it hostile rather thsn cooperative.
-
The "um" is an expression of utter exasperation. The epidemic of overconfidence in our country is overwhelming.
-
If you're overwhelmed take a deep breath before participating. That is part of being mature.

A ~900 word un-referenced statement on past 50 years of socio-dynamics deserves serious academic engagement? Its a bad 1st year essay.

Who does your Twitter feed? I can't believe that you are actually this ignorant in common exchange. Why do bad ideas have to be re-debated?

you get the impression he's like a rock star, unaware of what his staff is doing?

He's lost touch. It's like Luke was on the island too long and tells Rey, "You know the Empire made some good points."

Is, “all cultures are not equal,” by itself a controversial statement?
-
Controversial when one fails to note following sentence: ". . . not equal in preparing people to be productive in an advanced economy."

Let's ignore Wax's list of virtues for a minute. Are there not objective virtues? Wouldn't golden rule type stuff qualify as such?
-
If there are objective virtues, then how would cultures which uphold these virtues strongly be equal to those which do not?
-
Agree with your point, but am afraid that the topic of "objective virtues" is far too complex for Twitter. Sam Harris took a whole book!
-
Saying there are not ANY objective virtues seems absurd to me. Wax made a stronger claim but Penn seemed to reject something much broader.
