Naive interpretation. Fire in a crowded theater, bomb threats, etc. speech that crosses the line threatening public safety is not protected.

Those points R not political speech (R active threats). Political speech implies making claim of your viewpoint and must be completely free.

Well, yeah. But conversely, the first amendment can be used to 'normalise' true hate speech.
-
'Normalise' I keep seeing this. What exactly does it mean? I know what u think it means. But to me it's a vacuous statement. What's normal?
-
Maybe I should have said 'legitimizes'. In the mind of some people, of course. Germany has a different solution, see 'volksverhetzung'.
-
If those are positions that people genuinely hold they should be brought up for sincere debate. If we just outlaw it there is no chance of >
-
> changing their minds. So many people forget that just pointing out what's wrong doesn't actually solve anything. We must change their mind
-
Agreed. It is very hard to reach precisely those people though. Probably should start with basic education.

Out of interest, is incitement to violence allowed under that amendment?
-
No, and that's categorically different from hate speech.
-
I agree that it is different. and it was not a rhetorical question. I genuinely would like to know how the law deals with the difference.

It's not so obvious. Incitement to violence or breaking the law is illegal speech. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_free_speech_exceptions#Incitement …pic.twitter.com/1YhK7Wa8Tw
-
and since nazis wish death on all jews, people of color and members of the lgtbq community, i take some1 w/a nazi flag as inciting violence
-
Carrying a flag does NOT represent an imminent/ immediate threat. I hate Nazis. But I love free speech enough not to trade it.
-
This comic suggests it might not be clear-cut. After all, the Nazi symbol is associated w/ the eradication of Jews.http://www.drawninpowerpoint.com/2017/08/incitement.html …

So calling for someone's death is ok? An honest question.
-
Another one with cognitive dissonance. The 'So' tell.
-
I hope that made you feel better, but that is not an answer to my question.
-
So yes, you can threaten someone to certain degree. Hate speech is protected speech.pic.twitter.com/SzatopZ50x
