What if someone at Google expressed the opinion that Jews were evil or homosexuals were abhorrent? Would the same reasoning apply?

-
Well those statements are absurd opinions that are unfalsifiable. Damore's argument is rather compelling… hurt feelings aside.
-
Doesn't matter. The argument is about the free expression of ideas, not whether they are falsifiable or not.
-
A company should be free to fire someone who they disagree with. It's a very ugly look though. All coders should stand with James Damore
-
I'm a coder and I don't stand with Damore. If you go around pissing off your coworkers that's plenty reason to be fired.
-
Maybe those holding endless seminars about the cis hetero white men are pissing off a lot of their colleagues enough to be fired, no?
-
It's certainly possible that someone could be pissing off their colleagues no a range of issues, yes.
-
So majority hurt feelings matter, not minority hurt feelings. And don't use logic to tease out when to stand up for what. Got it.

if I ran a hospital, I wouldn't retain a doctor who revealed they thought babies came out of people's butts.

similarly, an engineer who thinks women's brains are unsuitable for engineering is fundamentally unqualified to work as an engineer.
-
these are not articles of "dissent," they are fundamental misunderstandings of really important parts of someone's job.

Google fired Damore in retaliation against him reporting their illegal discriminatory practices. Everything else is a smokescreen, IMHO.

Getting fired for stating that 1/3of your colleagues are genetically inferior, + displaying ignorance of your job, is not being "silenced".
-
I get that this is confusing for people who have never been told that they are genetically inferior, as a class, but it's not that confusing

These views aren't suppressed. Plenty of people in tech believe this; it is debated constantly. Don’t you understand Google’s position here?
-
Finding it hard to discuss over 140 characters. why google thought firing him was the right move, I mean. Would love to know exactly why.
-
The manner in which this teammate chose to raise this viewpoint was extremely disruptive and insensitive to his team.
-
If I sent a vegan manifesto using a Google Listserv that wasted the working hours of hundreds of employees I'd likely be fired too.
-
This wasn't just some random information he sent to waste everyone's time. It was relevant to problems he saw in the company
-
Google provides free food. If vegan food were served, costs would be down. Vegans live longer. Google employees would live longer.

His personal opinions of what role gender plays in his peers' work lives is as irrelevant as his opinions of what people should eat.
