Stop Telling Students Free Speech Is Traumatizing Them. Speech = Violence? Sheer nonsense. http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/07/students-free-speech-trauma.html?utm_source=tw&utm_medium=s3&utm_campaign=sharebutton-t … via @intelligencer

There is a certain naivity in arguing that verbal abuse can not cause chronic stress, since it is only a singular event.

This argument fails to see that campaigns of harassment are based on numbers:

A single Milo speech hurts no-one. Milo telling thousands to go after one of their co-students (as has happened), does.

As soon as your main point is not to propagate an argument, but rather to incite people to bully a single person, it is harmful.

That way, no one is treated unfairly. Define clearly what constitutes harassment, then a judge + jury can decide.

We learned in East Germany the hard way: prohibiting hate speech does NOT eliminate hatred - why do people refuse learning from history?

West German here: We learned the hard way that some speech from the hard right has to be limited BEFORE they control government.

It wasn't speech from the right but unwillingness to acknowledge mistakes that led to disaster in 1933, I hope history won't repeat itself
