I tried to convey this to a vegan on a @rickygervais thread. She was an absolutist and would accept total reduction or nothing.

Luckily the philosophy and math behind reducing meat intake still works whether others accept it or not.

I like the idea, but not the "saves cows" framing. Reducing meat consumption prevents future animals from existing, doesn't "save" any.
-
of course, but saving a currently existing animal makes little sense
-
IMO a well-treated cow, slaughtered humanely, has a life worth living. I think the focus should be on ensuring all farm animals' lives are.
-
Simply eliminating future cows that would've grazed contentedly in cow heaven until being humanely slaughtered doesn't solve anything.
-
well, reducing demand would reduce suffering. Additionally, we can work to improve conditions but that might be harder
-
Yes, until conditions improve, reducing meat demand is good. It seems that efforts to improve conditions have been more successful though.
-
Beef cattle arguably have net positive welfare but constitute a tiny percent of farm animal days. Saves beef cows not the best illustration.
-
Chicken would be a better illustration. They're being saved from suffering by being never born.

I'm really drawn to this idea and am trying to put it into practice. I was a pescetarian for a several years, but gave it up a while back
-
I want to get the moral and personal benefits of full-on veganism, but this is more practical and easier to hang with.

There's no benefit or 'need' to eat cows. Eat 0 cows and you save all the cows, the environment and your health. Simple
