To oppose racism, you don't have to say "races don't exist"- Bad idea to depend on this dubious empirical claim.http://goo.gl/ZpMlt3

I think races at best are ill defined fuzzy and unstable categories into which many individuals can not fit 2/2

lacking a clear boundary doesn't mean you can't make sense of a concept. Otherwise species can't exist neither

thx, that is true but the species concept is much less vagie, fuzzy and confusing than the race concept, don't you think?

it's natural to say he is from a different race. It's like colors,we have concepts for colors, although there's no boundary (2/3)

sure, but what is natural does not always correspond with what is true

the word "truth" is vague. It's not physically "true" to say that there are different colors, but it still makes sense to us

now we are getting into an epistemological discussion. I think twitter is not the best medium to do that (too lenghty threads)

these are social constructs - African American is not a 'race' - the whole idea of 'race' is outmoded & unscientific

Races only exist insofar as they reflect geographical distribution. Thus, there are thousands of races: not a useful concept.

this is true, but until that day when we are all mixed, the concept still is useful and will be used.

I'm skeptical. One who says "races exist" needs to clearly define and empirically prove (which article does not do) 1/2

"race" (as opposed to "ethnicity") is a backward/dated concept. You don't hear it mentioned in Europe much anymore
