Do you find "chemical imbalance" a shallow explanation of depression? A more thoughtful theory http://goo.gl/CxQiEY  http://goo.gl/Md9lOy

@sapinker "Chemical imbalance" has no empirical basis, as sociologists know and Scholar Leah Greenfeld explains.http://liahgreenfeld.com/home/mind-modernity-madness-reviews/ …

@sapinker Yup, shallow. It's bit like learning how to run an OS by opening up the hardware and tinkering with transistors.

@sapinker Not only a 'shallow explanation', but one that raises false hope; that the right chemicals will 'fix' you. But they don't :(

@sapinker I recently grumbled about this. Making it sound like this lifelong unstoppable problem feels awfully convenient for profit margins

@sapinker Our attempts to control unwanted inner experiences through ruminative thinking and avoidance likely cause and maintain depression.

@sapinker IMO "Chemical imbalance" is a necessary simplification to frame the crux of the problem as medical and easier to bill to insurance

@sapinker being a sufferer of it , it doesn't feel like a chemical imbalance per se , but I can relate to why they would call it that .
