        @sapinker By one definition, bullies actually have a developed sense of empathy. They understand how their actions make others feel.

        @sapinker @stiantkarlsen Circumstantial empathy,maybe - sentimentality,certainly.Must manage empathy though,else we'd walk around w/out skin

        @sapinker @stiantkarlsen No-one can respond to everything all the time - it would be like having all your nerves exposed.

        @AyjayH I believe @sapinker argues that empathy connected with reason is essential, if not empathy can actually do harm.

        @stiantkarlsen What I mean by sentimentality:empathy not connected to reason.Practically, though, we can only respond to 1 thing at time

        @AyjayH that's part of our nature yes, but he has a point that we should choose leaders that acts on reason first and empathy second.

        @stiantkarlsen Sure, but if we did, there'd be precious little aid going to anyone anywhere. Have a feeling that may be coming, to be honest

        @AyjayH we might misunderstand each other. For me there's no conflict between reason and humanism. Reason = Germany Empathy = Greece

        @sapinker Not by me. But it has aspects. Often the object is irrelevant, and unfamiliar; the empathiser has dammed-up emotions to discharge!

        @sapinker it's definitely overrated as a thing to be valued in and of itself. It's not that empathy is good, but it can facilitate the good.

        .@sapinker of course, empathy is highly manipulable in a poorly educated, politically & culturally divided soc'y. Paradoxes argue for educ.

        @sapinker Sounds like the interaction of 'too much empathy' with 'too much morality' increases violence, in contrast to common belief.
