I have to add, it’s this utopian wishful thinking that keeps the poor in Africa trapped. Instead of recognising the level of corruption and dereliction of duty of gov in Africa we are given long term “positive” growth etc. Yes humans are progressing but Africans are left behind.

I usually love Steven’s optimism on the human condition. But you can’t use that to cover up or excuse the violations happening in Africa. (Not everywhere, I’m part of a community that is working to change the next generation).

It was never a hopeless continent anyway. Such a scandalous framing in the first place. The whole idea still reflects colonial thought according to which 'Africa' was a 'pool of human misery' that needed to be 'developed' through European intervention.
