It's not a bad article. But it really needs another couple of presidents as a control group.

I think Scott should read about the American public as a thermometer, as he kind of implies it. When Obama got in, Americans got more suspicious of unions and government spending.http://themonkeycage.org/2010/06/the_public_is_a_thermostat/ …

It's Slate Star Codex, not Slate -_-' Those two sites are about as far apart as it is possible to be, in terms of quality.

I really liked your last book. Your arguments for your positions were all sound except for the gratuitous Trump bashing. I don't get it. You use reason with everything except Trump. Wouldn't it be more reasonable to wait and see the effects of his administration?

Because Trump is an authoritarian populist.

What does "authoritarian" mean in this context, apart from being a casual smear? What is it about Trump, precisely, that makes him an "authoritarian"?

I don't think Trump would disown him term. It's all the typical strong man stuff. He is obsessed with loyalty over truth, values hiw own power over democratic institutions. The more autocratic other world leaders are, the more he respects them.

We should distinguish between posturing and outcomes, for one thing. Secondly, what you've outlined is a highly idiosyncratic notion of the term - viz., not the dictionary definition. Give an example of something he's done that conforms to the dictionary definition.

Idiosyncratic, perhaps. IMO forcing people to say 2+2=5 as a loyalty test is the core of authoritarianism. At least let's agree he publically aspires to be an authoritarian. Pinker does better contrasting right (& left) wing populism with the enlightenment.

        very poor understanding, some can say 2 + 2 =4 others may say 3 + 1 = 4 doesn't mean they are wrong because you like 2 + 2 better

How quickly people forget: Trump on trade - https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-suggests-dropping-all-tariffs-trade-barriers-at-g7-summit-2018-6 … Trump has never opposed immigration. He has always opposed illegal immigration. Trump proposed path to citizenship for DACA, Dems rejected. Unequal opportunity is discrimination. Unequal outcomes are not.

A lot of those changes are because of the constant bombardment from media pushing a certain viewpoint on things. Billions of dollars in messaging will affect public opinion.
