I really get uncomfortable with the current movement of oversimplifying writing to "communicate" ideas better. A variety of vocabulary and perspectives are the artistic tools we use to add depth and meaning to our ideas.

I’m an older college student and I am amazed at the low level of reading ability of some of my classmates. I once had a classmate say I shouldn’t use the word “pernicious” because it was “too advanced.” She complained that she had to look it up, like that was a bad thing.

Some kids do. I think I was one of those precocious readers, but the technique that will serve kids throughout their whole lives is phonics. Adults learn words via context, but that’s different. We see enough Latin and Greek prefixes and suffixes, we can piece together meaning...

That’s disappointing ting. My son was taught phonics at his school in Australia. They took a multi-pronged approach actually. I’ve been pleased with what they have done.
