The professor who is philosophically opposed to teaching phonics to beginner readers because the studies which show it works “are just their science.” How did some branches of academia become so dumb?

English (eg) has 44 natural sounds (phonemes), but 200+ invented symbols (graphemes); this association needs explicit teaching. Reading & writing are not 'natural', they are components of a system invented by humans to symbolise natural language. Teachers: do not be afraid!

Phonics is an essential part of learning to read but we must remember that there are vast numbers of words in the English language that are not phonetic in nature. Learning to read by word recognition for shorter words assists children to develop a basic vocabulary that can then
-
be added to by using phonics. Sight reading increases students desire to read and had been proven to work. And once children are able to read basic words then introduce phonics to assist them with harder language.

What’s wrong with starting with phonics and then teaching the exceptions and contradictions as they’re encountered? That’s how I taught my daughter (she was falling behind at school) and now she reads very well.
-
And “phonic dependent” students find reading a massive challenge, even using phonics to spell CAT. “The cat sat on the mat” becomes “ Th-e the, c-a-t cat, s-a-t sat, o-n on, th-e the, m-a-t mat.”

Because the education system is run by unions who don’t care about outcomes. They only care about pay and benefits for their members. It’s a completely broken operation. I hope smart people like you can help fix it.
-
No they are run by school districts that are bureaucratic systems that inherently slow to change.

We have computer programs that can teach kids better. That might be a good way to move education.

Nice to read this. The key lies in brain research and the ways in which connections are made and consolidated. The reading wars, alas, are like religious wars, and barely influenced by reason. Did you read that book I left with you?

After reading the article and most of the comments, it seems the writer has missed or intentionally left out some of the nuance and complexity of the subject (a common theme nowadays in our character-limited "fast-food media" world). Constantly SMH: what can be done?

I was taught picnics as a child (30+years ago
)& that in turn taught me how to spell words proficiently. I don’t know why it fell out of favour but it seems to be back in my 4yo son’s school. My once vehemently ‘reluctant’ reader now points out & reads signs wherever we go

What is “picnics”?
-
"phonics" + autocorrect?
-
Indeed

-
Should "reading through autocorrect" be taught in schools too?

Just joking... But I'd definitely love to be taught picnics -
Plus in my day, the didn’t have autocorrect

-
Neither in mine. But I did have a relentlessly patient set of teachers and relatives willing to help

When I saw the title, I thought they meant we should be reading from right to left, misleading...
-
That would be something more like "why are we still teaching kids to read the wrong way"
