Once again the press gets gamed, giving saturation coverage and agonized commentary to a minor event. It's not major news that a country of 325m has a few malicious jerks who (correctly) anticipate 15 minutes of notoriety with a vindictive stunt.https://nyti.ms/2JdYhmQ

In what alternative universe does your brain exist in where assassination attempts on half a dozen political figures is not considered a major news story?

If you have not read it, Montesquieu's "The Spirit of the Ethics of the Laws of Gaming Journalism" is an essential text (read it in French if possible).

I suppose (big suppose) that a case for this position can be made for the caravan coverage. But to suggest media coverage of yesterdays events, which amount to assignation attempts, represents breathless “saturated” coverage is actually irresponsible to claim.

Put another way, if any of those bombs had successfully detonated, would the coverage still be “saturated” based on the standards you laid out? Having read your book, I think you are viewing this incedent from your own personal theoretical prism.

He’s taking his underlying thesis that the media focuses too much on daily negative stories rather than positive longer term trends to an illogical extreme.

Oh I caught that. How that applies to the current daily assault on truth & language, by a dictator wannabe & his post-conservative handlers.. justifying violence against the fourth estate qualifies his thesis as irrelevant.

A criticism of his work is that it diminishes progressive concerns & that it has been weaponized by conservatives.Specifically that 1) it legitimizes notion that press is biased 2) progressives shouldnt complain because the world is measurably more positive & healthy than in past

I get that your whole shtick is to be a Panglossian apologist for quotidian structural violence, but joining Trump this morning by effectively blaming "the press" for assassination attempts on journalists kind of gives the game away don't you think

First of all, check that the time series is not accelerating. Second, it is a fair criticism that people who thought asking someone to leave a restaurant was a great breakdown in civility are now utterly bored by actual bombs.
