The logic used to create AI is available in the free marketplace of ideas. A citizen can avail themselves of logic books and reduce their susceptibility to fake news. Then AI would not be needed to screen for fake news. This is a citizen problem.https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/post/texas-gop-rejects-critical-thinking-skills-really/2012/07/08/gJQAHNpFXW_blog.html?utm_term=.f2cef90d77b0 …

People shouldn't talk about AI as if it actually exists.

You can get a critique on news from dozens of commenters and independent youtube channels. You don't need AI. That would be centralisation.

Sure -- but Facebook could use AI to attach disclaimers to fake stories that have already been debunked, either on Snopes or by human factcheckers at FB. The role of AI could be to scale the work of perhaps ~100 full-time factcheckers to millions of posts via pattern-matching.

Depends what we mean by the ‘problem’. A.I. can help a) identify fake user accounts, and b) associate similar articles. This will go a long way to help slow dissemination. We don’t necessarily need an AI snopes replacement to make progress.

How would we know what kind of problens a general super intelligence could solve? There is no way to foresee the abilities of a mind that is several magnitudes smarter than you.

Pinker, to my rude untutored lay brain, definitely seems anti-AI. How about a discussion with him and Demis Hassabis, Ray Kurzweil, etc?

The belief that AI could solve the fake news problem comes from too much hype about its success. Just because an algorithm can pretty well predict which movies you’re likely to click, to believe it could predict the user’s intent, morality, motivations, etc, that is ludicrous.

The solution to fake news is mainstream media sources that are trustworthy. Fake news is just mainstream media with some extra fake.

AI is not the magic wand that will solve the ills technology helped create? Shocking!😒 Who could have foreseen that a company whose approach to development of social media was "move fast and break things" would break a lot of important things? Not "genius" Zuck, apparently!😲

Can you imagine?? An algorithm that identifies the formulation of a farce ??? How? By the type of syntax? How is the information formulated? Or more intricate ... an algorithm that contrast SOURCES ???? Maybe there is the key ...
