Yes I certainly had many problems with his analyses. I still find the apathy demonstrated towards his rather brutal murder consistently disturbing.
Did Sulaiman the Magnificent care what Henry VIII did to Sir Thomas More? point being that this is a religio-political conflict and an internal Islamic matter, the Saudi crypto-caliphate vs the Muslim Brotherhood if the roles were reversed, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ no good guys here
True. I am certainly not pushing for intervention into Saudi affairs. But it would be admirable if the administration took a hard line by curbing sale of weapons, or at least made this contingent on certain internal reforms/using them against civilians etc.
dunno Saudi is now Israel's only effective friend in the Muslim world why throw that away on behalf of a Muslim Brotherhood Hamas ally? Saudi is the only effective obstacle to Iran's terrorist pan-Islamism why throw that away for Khashoggi?https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/253460 …
One needn't throw it away. It can be tied to a system of rewards for gradual internal reforms. We have seen that this can be effective given recent Saudi efforts to at least posture at respecting liberal values with a Sunni twist.
often, reformers have opposition not only externally on the left [such as the Muslim Brotherhood] but internally on their right it could be Khashoggi was a sacrifice to Saudi loyalists an internal matter we may never penetrate and a bad hill to let Saudi cooperation die on
Unfortunately there is no free expression in any Muslim county. But there is a fee attached to expression. And this fee could be as high as your life.
Riiiiight Mr. Muslim Brotherhood really wanted free expression.. no he wanted to be able to criticize Saudi Arabia while pushing Turkish propaganda
Leftists highlighting Islam's need for free expression is laughable. We ALL know the consequences for expressing an alternative POV from leftist ideology by today's left & bastions of illiberalism: academia, Google, media FULL Video http://youtu.be/6zaj-nD9wPE pic.twitter.com/7HTkelPzVF
It greatly saddens me to read his last piece. The sense of finality is heartbreaking.
The only free expression he was granted was his blood all over a room in Istanbul.
Thank you.
Does Iran need free press as well, Mr Pinker? Or are you only obsessed with Saudi and see Iran as a good influence to counter Israel?
Iran is clearly better than Saudi Wahabism.
So there is a leaderboard of which country is the worst? Iran forces every woman to wear hijab. Kills 500+ every year for mundane crimes. Don't be an apologist for an evil regime to make your point.pic.twitter.com/fYNdTdlxEk
I’m not an apologist for anyone. Things are better or worse than other things. Iranian people specifically seem more secular & less crazy religious. And the Saudis open schools that teach an awful strain of Suni Islam that directly leads to Isis type thinking. So worse.
Saudi people and Iranian people are the same. It's the regimes that are vile. Iran kills people for "speculating" and leaving Islam. I don't think you are on firm grounds when you say Iran is better.
Agreed on the first part. And I’m not saying the Iranian regime is good. If what you say is truth then that sucks. But is it worse than spreading Sunni fundamentalism? Meaning in total numbers of death? And wars like Syria & Iraq? I don’t know.
