Though current nuclear reactors are basically fine, safety and environment wise. Could nuclear power be better? Sure, but it's already the best electricity generating technology we have.

Which of the current power-reactor technology? RBMK, BWR, PWR, AGR/GCR, CANDU or SFR?
-
Pretty much any of them, since you didn't list RBMK :)

There is nothing new here. Irish didn’t stumble upon anything new. Molten salt reactors were a thing of the past. There are very good reasons they were abandoned for safer pressurized water reactors which have worked wonderfully for almost 60 years.

Best of luck to you in advancing the next generation in nuclear power!

It wasn't implemented because it didn't produce material for nuclear weapons.

Video of sodium meeting water. When I was at a former sodium reactor site it was explained to me that to achieve those benefits was to deal with serious dangers. Naval reactors can’t escape the water. On dry land may be a different story.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XHvRGzls6SY …
-
On dry land it was. Melt down not possible.

Fuel salts flowing in the lines is a challenge. The engineers and financiers don’t think through the costs to maintain that mess. Ever work at a BWR or borated PWR? Everything is contaminated and all work requires radiation protection which adds greatly to the crippling O&M costs
-
Liquid fuel handling is simple. Refuelling MSR is simple(no need of complex refuelling machines like CANDU). It done online at full power. It is shown in MSRE documentary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyDbq5HRs0o … Fuel samples can also be taken out of reactor while it is operating for analysis.

More of this
@sapinker please. Nuclear needs a serious PR push. Most people just assume it is the worst idea ever whereas it is something we cannot afford not to do. -
exactly. this is nothing but pr for the nuclear industry. in the meantime pinker makes pr for viktor orban's fight against freedom and intellect.
-
How so? It’s just that my image of
@sapinker is of a person encouraging both freedom & intellect. The nuclear industry needs good PR because it has a bad image amongst an uninformed public. -
The US nuclear industry gets lots of funded & unfunded PR. All this PR would make more sense if their economic claims were transparent & included public subsidies for reactor construction, AND future liabilities for decommissioning & waste storage normally left to the public.
-
Agreed. Things are not great. We need more people putting more pressure on government to be better.
-
The less government involvement the better.
-
In how we live, yes. Personally I would want the government enforcing safety on a nuclear power plant as well as pushing for clean energy. Neither of those are likely to be served well by profit driven companies.
-
I'm not saying no oversight, but the current regulatory system is so onerous as to make new construction next to impossible.

Nice. Advancements in nuclear energy efficiency and safety were already pretty viable mid-2000s. It's good to see research making more progress.

ANY NUCLEAR IS A HUGE LEAP BACKWARDS!! WE NEED 100% RENEWABLE SUSTAINABLE DECENTRALIZED ENERGY! THIS IS THE REAL WAVE OF THE FUTURE! NOT MORE OF THE SAME WITH A NEW NAME! ENERGY INDEPENDENCE! SOLAR ROOFS, WINDOWS N DRIVEWAYS W/ TESLA BATTERY 4 NIGHT TIME
-
I wouldn't say it's a huge step backwards but I agree that presently and in the short term future, the US should be investing heavily in "alternative energy." The current reliance on fossil fuels speaks volumes about the lack of vision in the US gov
