David Brooks in NYT: "Unfortunately, people in the exhausted majority have no narrative. They have no coherent philosophic worldview to organize their thinking and compel action." That's why I wrote Enlightenment Now (https://bit.ly/2sTF7hE )https://nyti.ms/2QUYu1b

It doesn't have to be complicated: Don't hurt other people for the fun of it. That seems to be the GOP narrative right now. Enjoying the pain of others. Cruelty for fun. Sociopathy For Everyone!

Generation at helm typifies misery. After being given so much!! We’re sacrificing young people to keep CO2 polluter privileges we don’t need. How did Boomers end up this way? Decades of sedentary habits, insulin-galore bad sleep and tech berserk hyper competitiveness harms brain.

"Unfortunately, people in the exhausted majority have no narrative"Brooks is wrong on this. Their narrative might be non-conforming,an amalgam of the two dominant ones, but they do think freely, with perhaps far more critical thinking than the tribal extremes, for better or worse

Dr. Pinker, surely you know the science that indicates that the human brain evolved to respond much more powerfully to ancient myths & archetypes (found all over the world in many religions & political movements) than to the scientific "Enlightment" worldview?pic.twitter.com/XphAqw9Knp

So we need to be smart about mythology. One of my favorite mythologies about technological progress solving all problems is really struggling right now...

My own narrative is fairly simple: I'd rather my gender, age, race, and marital status not be the only group OK to make the butt of jokes here in my own country.

It's obvious that two-party political model is obsolete in 21 century. The modern society is too complex for only two political ideologies. Wider political spectrum will create more flexible system and will engage more "exhausted" people to vote.

If I could rebuild my life my #1 priority would be no television. Internet/smartphone addiction is bad, but not as immersive. TV’s control of the “reality” of what is supposedly going on is the worst.

The authors of the study cited in Brooks’ article believe that social division is a threat. Their cure is for us to all join the silent majority or what they call the “exhausted majority.” Things will all be better once people like me have given up their strong beliefs.

If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without plowing up the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters F Douglas

They are unanimous in their hate for me--and I welcome their hatred. I should like to have it said of my 1st Admin. that in it the forces of selfishness and of lust for power met their match. I should like to have it said of my 2nd Admin that in it these forces met their master.

Some liberals don't understand that arguing we should just continue the slow progress of science, reason, and humanism is not a message that resonates with those who think the distribution of that progress is out of whack. This explains the appeal of populism. @nytdavidbrooks
