And from Chomsky: “Unless you believe that the future can be better, you are unlikely to step up and take responsibility for making it so.” https://www.wired.com/story/wired25-louis-rossetto-tech-militant-optimism/?mbid=social_twitter_onsiteshare … via @WIRED

Facts don't care about your feelings. Saving humanity from extinction would involve re-freezing the Arctic permafrost. This is a narcissistic fantasy of human omnipotence. - Proud Climate EdgeLord

I also like how Chomsky is for the occasion an authority if something he says happens to support your agenda. His world view is the opposite of yours. You claim the world is an almost pure and benevolent meritocracy, Chomsky believes it is a malignant corporate dictatorship.

We need people to understand nuance, complexity, trust science and not put celebrities on a pedestal. Amongst other things we need these are a few.

'Militant Optimism'. That just sounds really stupid, and it will end badly. [The last sentence is militant common sense.]

Optimism like pessimism is a detriment. Let's be realistic. The world is in a better place; we're moving forwards. Yes we have problems.. lets not overstate them, let's not fall into moral panics and hyperbole. Let's look honestly at the issues and find pragmatic ways forward.

Remember when Chomsky did “Manufacturing Consent”? I think you should rewatch it, then take a look at whats happening now. Its just too obvioius. I believethe future can be better, but the present isnt awful.

Laurence Gonzales writes of this in his Deep Survival books. Those who survive [shipwreck & mountaineering & shark attack survivors], they are the ones with the positive, even humorous perspectives. Works against the frozen fear reaction.
