Been arguing with conservative echo chambers on this very topic for last 2 days. Exhausting beyond belief

There is a rise in mortality rates among Americans. Again, Pinker is asking Americans to feel a warm glow about decreased mortality in the developing world, while America continues its downward slide. It seems his thesis generally works best when averaging world wide.

Progress, Pinker? Sure, I’ll examine that, Mr. Anthropocentric:

We’ve driven plants and animals to mass extinction, destroyed two-thirds of the planet’s forests, created acid rain that poisons lakes, eroded the soil, dammed or drained rivers completely, and pumped our atmosphere full of carbon dioxide that is acidifying 1/

our oceans and killing its reefs, melting the ice caps, raising sea levels, destabilizing the climate. And endangering entire peoples. We’ve jeopardized the biosphere, etc 2/

Yes, we have solved many of the past’s issues. The issue is that we’ve created a whole new host of problems that are greater than that which we’ve overcame. Like, for example, destroying the planet to a degree in which it may result in our extinction. But progress, right? 3/

Exactly. Despite all that we have actually progressed. Much better to be alive today than 100 years ago.

In my state, Maine, infant mortality and childhood poverty rates are accelerating in the wrong direction. Take your utopia bullshit and shove it.

I agree, Western medicine is amazing. Do you see the plummeting birth rates in Western countries as a problem tho? The people who created that medicine aren't reproducing, which seems like regress.

In Enlightenment Now, @sapinker shows data that as child mortality in the third world decreases, so does the number of children they have.

I think the book also showed the trajectory of world pollution. Would you consider reading Enlightenment Now?
