        I argued the same thing in my poorly written dissertation, https://utdr.utoledo.edu/theses-dissertations/1194/ …. In a nutshell, I argued that the Portuguese economy was retarded by rigid religious and social structures--both intertwined, structures that were giving way in the places like England.
