William Saletan makes a good prima facie case for Jon Huntsman being the anonymous NYT op-ed writer, but it needs to be confirmed by a good statistical linguist: Colleagues? https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/09/new-york-times-op-ed-anonymous-writer-trump.html?wpsrc=sh_all_dt_tw_ru … via @slate

why not? He isnt doing anything particularly good, according to the op-ed. Perhaps if he were anti-war or anti drug war, it'd be interesting.

No, no, no, Steven! You’ve got it all wrong! What you need is a hyper-diversified MSNBC panel of guest hosts making shallow extemporaneous guesses about who anonymous is.

Outing the person isn’t a great idea. If they wanted to be identified, they would have signed it.

Seems the op-ed story is flipping and not hitting the mark you all wanted. Would seem to me "someone" on the left has hoped it would help remove or at least raise tensions between the US and Russia by accusing the current US ambassador to Russia. 3D chess anyone? Not working

Ben Franklin wrote many anonymous letters to the editor of various papers. It’s an effective tool used to promote discourse without focusing on the messenger. Generally people only care about author in this case because the message is true.

Surely it's as unethical to out this person as it is to out anonymous sources for other stories. As I understand it, the paper that published the article says they have confirmed the identity of the author; shouldn't that be enough?

Hmm. Interesting. But it seems awfully cowardly. . .however he might have been thinking of Trump when he said this: "Normal people don't just wake up in the morning and say I think it'd be a good idea to run for president of the United States." Jon Huntsman
