Stunning glimpse of that world. Ghost towns (and the 30+ year abandoned California military base we drove through this weekend) provide a look into history and politics unlike any otherwise contained museum.
You would think as these complexes were being planned the country might have considered future closure and post-military use of the land. People can’t find affordable housing here; yet there the boxes sit in their rocks and weeds.
But that branch of our country did not factor in chemical clean-up or future benefit of the land to later generations. In Alameda, CA, the only ones using a few of the structures are two large distilleries, a winery and brewery. Pioneer and mining towns are quaint ...
