Most people are wrong about how the world has changed (and they are the ones who are most pessimistic about the future) - Our World in Datahttps://ourworldindata.org/wrong-about-the-world …

People in the west are not worse off than before but their improvement is a lot less spectacular than in poorer countries. When you lose your sense of exclusiveness the suffering can be real. That’s how the human mind works.

Most of us weren't pessimistic until Trump came along. Let's see some data on that.

Republicans were pessimistic when Obama was in. Democrats were pessimistic when Bush was in and also would have been if McCain had been President. Pessimism is related to feelings of hatred or fear toward leadership, not science.

Most people who occupy themselves with efforts to tell people things have improved are neglecting efforts to tell people how we can make a sustainable society, so that gains of recent centuries & decades can be preserved and built on. Why does the data combine "remain the same" and "don't know"? Shouldn't "don't know" be separate or excluded?

Is the improvement of global extreme poverty on the backs of the middle class in the western world? Because the rich are getting richer but everyone around me seems to be getting poorer. I am happy for the overall trend, but income inequality is definitely getting worse here.

Primarily, the world has changed dramatically towards the destruction of our ecological niche. Although I agree in fighting habitual pessimism, I see no point in pushing the naively opposite extreme.

Isn’t it possible there there are metrics not captured that alter the rosy picture? Say, increased existential dread as people have easier lives and more time to think? I worry a complacency from this data could cause us to miss cracks in the dam.

Given the narrative today ...I reposted the exact same link you shared from 2016 just 30 minutes ago to my FB. Then realizing my Wife didn't even click on the link....I then re-posted it with a couple of summarizing points to drill home. Come here to see you also reposted.
