I just finished the podcast. I still can't understand how a kid can have a certainty of their self perceived gender and then, have a medical operation with life-long consequences. I found that disturbing, to say the least.

If you define gender as 'synonym for biological sex', there are 2. If you define gender as 'synonym for my fee-fees', there are as many genders as there are attention seeking snowflakes.
-
There are more than just XX and XY
-
Yes, but there are not more than 2 biological sexes.
-
The article doesn't claim there are more than 2 sexes.
-
So you have a problem reading I see

-
2 basic sexes (or more if you like) But my question is regarding gender . 2 basic ones (M attracted to F) (F attracted to M) next 2 genders (M attracted to M) (F attracted to F) Now that's 4 basic genders. Not 2. No one can claim MM or FF is socially constructed can they?

Sexuality can be determined by societal norms - E.g. institutionalized same sex pederastry (boy love) and thiasos (girl love) in old Greece. Female homosexuality is eroticized in our culture as a turn on for heterosexual men, while straight women are not turned on by gay men.
-
1)In general women aren't turned on by visual stimulus as much as men. The porn industry caters to the visual interests of men, on average, the romance novel to the interests of women. Certainly looks matter for women, but narrative is more important.
-
2) "Contrary to popular perception, women do not make up 150% of romance readers. According to survey results from Romance Writers of America, 84 percent of romance readers are women and 16 percent are men — up from 9 percent a few years ago."https://www.huffingtonpost.com/maya-rodale/who-is-the-the-romance-novel-reader_b_7192588.html …

4) Here is a fascinating study based on data from dating sites. Note that all this data includes men and women from different base cultures in the US. Data is similar across the globe.https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/08/online-dating-out-of-your-league/567083/ …
