Good stuff. But it was a pity that Maher interrupted you so often.

Free trade good for the world? Common for who? Some differentiation please. You must analyze progress systematically and contextually. it is not a white / black debate. medical progress yes but also more addicts and personality disorders. Moral progress? Doubtful see psychology.

perhaps buying the book could give you all the data available, and all the answers that you won't be able to get in a 6 min video.

I read the book. Not my cup if tea. Besides Enlightment Now is a contradiction in terminus.
-
well, you have the right to think so. Greetings.

A question: are economic laws and values compatible with the values of the Enlightenment? Even are they compatible with the notion of democracy?
-
Aren’t economic laws in principal unconnected to the values? The outcome of those laws however can be compatible but doesn’t have to be. Or both at the same time. Any reform or system has positive and negative effects.
-
Well as long that economic systems take tman as a goal and not as a means there is no problem. Question is does it??

It was interesting to watch D.L. Hughley keep moving his goalposts. It seemed he had a conclusion to further that did not align with the facts Pinker was presenting. Can’t we agree that while problems still exist, things are better overall? Seems reasonable enough.
-
Yes and that discussion was really moving and Pinker was educating, changing views in a perfect gentle way and the show devolved into a Bill Mayer stand up routine practice session. Annoying!

It would have been nice if
@billmaher had let you talk... -
I agree - he didn’t really listen. Pinker could have schooled him on vaccines for example. It was just getting interesting with DL then BM shut it down to do his annoying Q skit - very childish

Bill Maher seems to really enjoy the sound of his own voice. I sometimes wonder why he bothers to have guests on his show.

A further conversation with D. L. Hughley into identity politics would have been interesting. It seems that data was irrelevant when it came to his point of view / concerns. Note; his concerns are warranty and legitimate.

I admire Pinker but reconciling idea of carbon dependent world economy (producing miraculous quality of life improvements) & idea of taxing carbon (which would slow future improvement) gives me a headache. I’m not against clean energy. I don’t see reason to slow improvement.
