NYT op-ed rationalizing Saudi tantrum against Canada misses the point: A tribal “culture of honor” that treats criticism of dominant men as an intolerable affront (sound familiar?) is the enemy of modernity, progress, and humane values.https://nyti.ms/2KSD3ds

Culture of Honor -- over-reacting to every perceived offense -- won't work very well in a world where four billion people have smartphones and access to social media.

"without which there is no basis for legitimate rule." What is "legitimate" about Saudi rule? Are liberty and democracy and human rights universal tenets of a modern society or something to be subjugated to geopolitical practicalities? History is a good teacher on this point.

The Saudi kings are running a scam. The white robes & black burkas are discarded the moment their jets leave Saudi airspace for normal people clothing. The Saudi monachary is a scam.

Also, even a cursory glance at that author will tell you how pro Saudi and MBS he is. I suspect the Arabia Foundation is funded by the KSA, at a glance. Am I correct?

Wait...the NYT is chastising others for criticizing truth to power....Isn't that exactly what the NYT's stands for? The good a Saudi prince is trying to do good does not shield him from criticism.....welcome to lesson #1 in the comparison of Monarchy vs Democracy.....

Just the way around. It is being continuously permitted by the progressivism all over the world (mostly in Europe) under the euphemism of "multiculturalism".

You also miss an important point: living in a denial, looking in a narrow window and ignoring all the facts, is the enemy of societies that are always misconstrued by politicizing human rights and values.

I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make, but just to be clear, America’s embrace of freedom even includes the freedom to burn the American flag as a sign of protest. The Supreme Court has expressly recognized that right.
