“No thinking person should be indifferent to our society's disinvestment in the humanities.A society without historical scholarship is like a person without memory:deluded, confused, easily exploited." -Steven Pinker

Still not addressing the main issue: many in modern humanities leave out too much of the old, "learn how to think," part.

I'd say actually that there is a crisis in student debt and people are responding by not studying things that lead to low paying jobs. It's the sake for marriage. There're fewer marriages these days because too many of us have witnessed expensive divorces.
-
The humanities are a frivolity for those who already have money. It's obvious by the form of thinking they teach, post-modernism. Can you imagine a bridge engineered by a post-modern thinker? Who would drive on it?
-
Thus, the humanities are actually a way to signal how little you need to think usefully, and how useless you can afford to be to others/society. Such people study and parade a form of thinking that spits on the face of reality.
-
What an excellent way to demonstrate how financially secure and elite one is. Given that America has fewer such people these days, it stands to reason humanities courses have fewer attendees.
-
Because people cannot afford to be useless to others with a way of thinking that ignores reality.

1/ If I wanted to make $$$ from
@sapinker, I wouldn't ask him what he can do for me, I'll make him understand what service or skill I can offer him. That's what JFK meant when he said “... ask not what your country can do for you ...” -
Said don't be a loafer, but an entrepreneur...

2/ JFK wasn't being philanthropic or merely patriotic as you made it seem in chapter three of "Enlightenment Now", he was asking Americans to make themselves valuable.
